Where We Are

Thurnham Parish LogoG-Forces is proud to be part of the beautiful parish of Thurnham.

The historic village and ancient parish of Thurnham lies at the foot of the North Downs three miles North East of Maidstone in Kent. The name Thurnham is not usually associated with the area, which has been overtaken by the name Bearsted, and the continuing development of the thriving town of Maidstone.  (This is why G-Forces postal address is Bearsted).

The Parish of Thurnham has a significant history, it is dissected by the Pilgrim’s Way, which is the route supposed to have been taken by pilgrims from Winchester in Hampshire, to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury in Kent. The Black Horse public house lies on the Pilgrims Way and still provides a rest for weary travellers to the Parish, and is still the only real sign of civilisation amongst the mixture of manor houses and farms.

The North Downs, a high ridge of chalk hills spanning the South East corner of England, is home to the North Downs Way. For much of its length the North Downs Way national trail parallels the old Pilgrim's Way between Winchester and Canterbury. Much of the traditional route of the Pilgrims' Way is now part of the modern road network and walkers wishing to follow it are advised to use the North Downs Way as an alternative.

From its vantage point high on the North Downs and above the Pilgrim’s Way lies Thurnham Castle, a 12th century flint-built castle. Also known as Godard's Castle there is very little left of the original castle except for the spectacular view across the East Kent countryside. One side of the bailey wall still stands ten foot high and originally it enclosed an area of about a quarter of an acre. There is no visible stonework on the large motte. Recent redevelopment of the surrounding area of the site by the council has made this area an even more spectacular view point on the downs.
