Recent results have shown us that 32% of smartphone users access the internet, 44% use it as an information tool, 47% for entertainment, 43% are accessing social media and 32% access retailer websites.

With this in mind only 9% of the Top200 motor retailers are actually mobile ready.

Staying in touch wherever you may be is part of our 24/7 culture. The comfort blanket of feeling connected is shared by many people but perhaps more to the point, many car buyers. It is not surprising the rise of the smartphone fuelled by the iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Google's Android has been prolific. The hype surrounding the iPhone's launch back in 2007 was referred to as "the largest commercial product launch in the history of electronics" by Stan Sigman, CEO AT&T. His view was not far from the truth as Apple has sold over 30 million iPhones in the first 2 years since its launch.

The smartphone has answered many a prayer by integrating numerous killer apps such as calendar, email and web browsing into portable devices. Its uptake is driven, like the internet, by convenience. Studies by Nielsen have shown that in the UK more than 2.5 million mobile users surfed the Internet in the last quarter of 2009. The mobile channel can serve multiple purposes including brand building, customer acquisition, commerce and customer relationship management. Mobile can act as a great compliment to other marketing channels, providing the opportunity to drive real-time direct response from billboards, radio, print ads, television shows and more. In addition, it serves as a powerful stand-alone vehicle marketing tool as well.
